Pediatric Cardiac Cath Lab

Department Profile: The Pediatric Cardiac Cath Lab at Duke University Hospital is active in delivering exemplary care for each patient to ensure an excellent patient experience, every time.
Applicant will have the opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art pediatric and congenital cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology lab. Procedure rooms due to be completely renovated this year. Excellent team of nurses and techs dedicated to the care of patients with adult and congenital heart disease.
Pediatric experience preferred.
Work Hours & Shifts:
Full Time: Procedural start time is 7 am.
Regular procedures scheduled Monday through Friday. No scheduled weekends or holidays.
Four 10- hour shifts.
Participate in call rotation for weekends and holidays.
The Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (CVIS) will utilize professional cardiovascular theory, technology and processes to implement direct patient care on pediatric patients that require diagnostic or therapeutic procedures within the cardiovascular service. Demonstrates role-specific competence and assists physicians in diagnosing and treating cardiac and peripheral vascular disease and cardiac arrhythmias in the Cath Lab, EP Lab, and Hybrid OR specializing in the care of patients undergoing angioplasty, stent placement, vascular procedures, mechanical support device placement (IABP, non-durable ventricular assist device, etc.), EP devices, cardiac ablations, and tilt table exams.
Assist the physician during invasive and noninvasive procedures to treat cardiac and peripheral vascular disease and cardiac arrhythmias.
Maintain high standards to achieve quality patient care.
Communicate continuously with the physician about the patient's condition.
May perform any of the following: diagnostic catheterization procedures on pediatric patients with known and suspected congenital and acquired cardiac and peripheral vascular disease.
Interventional procedures which may include any of the following: PTCA, stent prep and placement, IABP placement and operation.
EP procedures may include any of the following; EP studies, implantation of pacemaker, ICD, cardia cablations, and tilt table exams.
Procedural requirements: Room preparation and breakdown including but not limited to, radiographic, hemodynamic and computer setup, stocking rooms and room cleanup. Prepare sterile field appropriately for specified procedure type.
Evaluate the status of the patient during the procedure; provide age and gender specific care, prep access site according to lab standard practice, and perform EKG lead placement, blood pressure and pulseoximetry setup for hemodynamic monitoring.
Acquire and accurately document pertinent patient data in the electronic health record and enter into hemodynamic and X-ray systems.
Operate all physiologic and radiographic equipment safety and correctly.
Assess procedure room for equipment functioning and readiness.
Obtain supplies for individual cases and ensure all appropriate needs of the Cath Lab/EP Lab team are met.
Observe occupational and radiation safety regulations (wearing dosimeter badges, lead aprons, goggles).
Educate the patient of procedure expectations before, during and after the procedure including post-procedural limitations and restrictions.
Participate in performance improvement activities.

Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing required
A graduate of an associate or baccalaureate academic program in health science (including, but not limited to, cardiovascular technology, ultrasound, radiologic technology or respiratory therapy) OR A graduate of an associate or baccalaureate academic program in an unrelated field along with graduation from a certificate program in cardiovascular technology, ultrasound, radiology technology or respiratory.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification required within 6 months of employment (Adult Cath, Adult EP, & Hybrid OR only).
Duke employees in the CVIS job classification as of January 1, 2016 who were not eligible for certification will be exempt from the certification requirements of the CVIS I. See ladder document for additional information.
