These positions are located in the VA Medical Center, Lebanon, Pennsylvania working as an Intermediate Care Technician for the Emergency Department (ED) with patients who are present for treatment, performs observation-based screening and collects patient information. You will be responsible for completing approved templates and tools (i.e. triage screening), obtaining patient health history for complaints, medication history, and information about health-related or high-risk conditions. To qualify for this position at the GS-7 level, you must meet one of the following minimal requirements: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of this Intermediate Care Technician position and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes: assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an emergency setting; initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ACLS/BLS) and use of automatic external defibrillator (AED); operates specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus; able to perform measurements of PR, QRS, QT, RR, and QTC intervals, interprets rhythm, and prints rhythm strip; recognizes lethal rhythms/arrhythmias (i.e. ventricular fibrillation and asystole); assists in identifying patients that require advanced wound care and assists with procedures related to wound closure; assists in and performs triage of patients; assists medical providers/nursing staff with patient's medical care. ["***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Assists in routine, complex, and behavioral/psychiatric situations in an emergency setting (includes assisting licensed personnel with crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, providing one-to-one observations and applying prevention and management of disruptive behavior techniques (PMDB); Performs duties focused on communication techniques required to complete questionnaires and templates approved for use in the ED, including active listening, restating, and mirroring; Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for the patient while promoting a sense of worth and dignity under the supervision of the licensed personnel; Responsible for vital signs. Examples: vital signs, 12-lead electrocardiogram (EKG); Utilizes Abbott hand-held blood analyzer (I-STAT), glucometer; Performs observation based screening and collects patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel; Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for the patient; Assists ED licensed personnel with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations; Sets up equipment and passes instruments for different procedures; Recognizes life threatening situations and act to correct these emergent situations; Initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ACLS/BLS) and use of automatic external defibrillator (AED) once trained and certified; Assists with airway management using bag-valve-mask (BVM), oral airway or nasal airway; Uses pulse oximetry, capnometry, capnography, and/or other secondary confirmation methods to ensure correct placement of an emergency advanced airway; Operates specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus; Observes patient status and keeps licensed personnel informed of any change in condition; Provides support, relief, and coverage as needed to central station telemetry; Performs measurements of PR, QRS, QT, RR, and QTC intervals, interprets rhythm, and prints rhythm strip; Recognizes lethal rhythms/arrhythmias (i.e. ventricular fibrillation and asystole); Appropriately implements emergency care in accordance with established protocols and policies; Obtains and maintains certification in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and basic life support (BLS), and other certifications as pertinent to the local facility; Conducts or assists with simple and complex wound closure if appropriately trained, certified and/or qualified; Conducts or assists with triage of patients if appropriately trained, certified and/or qualified; Conducts or assists with the training of personnel in CPR, and advanced emergency medical care techniques if appropriately trained, certified and/or qualified; and Performs other related duties as assigned.
