Job Summary:

The Billing and Coding staff are responsible for the validity of claims. They review claims for completion and correctness and correct errors. The Billing/Coding staff is responsible for communicating with clients to obtain required information. The incumbent in this position will support the mission, vision, values and strategic initiatives of Mary Washington Healthcare and must demonstrate a commitment to quality service to patients, physicians, the public and co-workers.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

• Evaluate claims for correctness and completeness.
• Review patient record to determine proper billing or medical code in accordance to HCFA and ICD guidelines to facilitate prompt, accurate remittance.
• Accurately and efficiently monitor and complete billing reports.
• Interact with key departments (e.g. Patient Accounts, Patient Access, Cath Lab, EP Lab, Pathology Lab, etc.) to retrieve appropriate information and communicate issues.
• Responsible for regulatory requirements for claims processing and implement them in daily operations.
• Assist with client and patient billing inquiries as necessary.
• Interact with appropriate staff to educate and follow-up on billing-related issues.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• CPC or medical billing certification preferred: billing and coding work experience may be substituted.
• One to two years clinical laboratory or hospital related experience is preferred.
• Two years of medical coding experience preferred.
• Patient registration experience is preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy/physiology required.
• Data entry experience preferred.
• Outstanding communications and customer service skill.
• Must be proficient with computer applications, such as Microsoft Word and Excel is required.

Additional responsibilities for Cardiac Cath Lab

• Responsible for the validity of all charging functions to include, maintaining and reviewing the charge logs for completion and correctness and addresses any errors or inconsistencies for Cardiac Cath Holding, Cardiac Cath Lab, and EP.
• Communicates as appropriate with the manager, charge nurse and the physicians about changes in scheduling, completed documentation and dictation, and other required information.
• Assists in performing essential clerical and support duties to facilitate accurate documentation (maintaining procedure folders), retrieval of administrative and clinical operations, dictated reports, filing, burning CD's and mailing CD's. This includes receiving and responding to telephone messages, disseminating communications, scheduling cases for the Cardiac Cath and EP labs, and ordering supplies and forms. Maintains worksheets for statistics on projects within the department.
• Performs activities that support the cleanliness and maintenance of the physical area in the department, to include Nurses' station.
• Readily assist staff to transport patients to their destinations, and assists in non-patient care (i.e. pre-surgical case preparation, assists with procedure table set-up), to ensure delivery of quality care.
